Government Considers Inquest into Creeslough Explosion

The Irish government is set to consider holding an inquest into the Creeslough tragedy, according to the Irish Justice Minister, who met with families of the victims.

On 7 October 2022, an explosion occurred at a service station in County Donegal, resulting in the deaths of 10 individuals. The victims included four men, three women, two teenagers, and a five-year-old girl, all from Creeslough village or its surrounding areas.

Ten family members met with Jim O'Callaghan, the Justice Minister, for approximately an hour and a half at the Department of Justice in Dublin on Thursday.

To date, no official cause has been provided for the explosion, and no charges have been filed despite several arrests related to the investigation.

The families have been actively seeking answers and have requested an inquest into the incident.

The Minister acknowledged the request and stated he will consider an inquest but expressed concerns that initiating one prematurely could interfere with the ongoing criminal investigation.

"The minister said he will consider an inquest but the Irish government is worried that setting up an inquest too early may interfere with the criminal investigation underway."
