Walrus Spotted on Orkney Pier

A walrus has attracted attention after unexpectedly appearing on a pier in Orkney. The marine mammal, which showed signs of injury, was observed earlier this week on the island of Stronsay.

Local resident David Askew was among those who captured photographs of the animal and noted that it seemed to be resting. Despite concerns regarding its wounds, he mentioned that the walrus later appeared to be "looking happier."

Experts have advised the public to maintain a safe distance and avoid disturbing the walrus, which is estimated to be approximately 2.5 meters (8 feet) in length.

Eyewitness Accounts

Kevin Tullock, a crew member on the Orkney Ferries vessel MV Varagen, recounted that he and his colleagues were loading the ferry when they noticed the rare visitor. He expressed his astonishment, stating he had only previously seen walruses on television.

Expert Commentary and Public Guidance

Emma Neave-Webb from the Orkney Marine Mammal Research Initiative (OMMRI) confirmed concerns about the walrus's injuries. In a social media post, she explained the challenges involved in assisting such an animal:

"In situations like this there is often little that can practically be done - nature generally takes its course and there are obviously difficulties in safely getting close to an animal of this size let alone treating it.
What this does mean is that keeping your distance and allowing the animal to rest undisturbed is even more important than usual. Stress will not help its recovery.
The best thing anyone can do for this walrus right now is leave it in peace."

Orkney Islands Council also urged members of the public to maintain a safe distance from the walrus.

Previous Walrus Sightings in Orkney

Walrus appearances in Orkney are rare but not unprecedented. In 2013, a walrus was seen on North Ronaldsay, the northernmost island of Orkney. Another walrus was spotted on the same island before moving slightly south and resting on the island of Sanday in 2018.

This report was prepared by local democracy reporter Andrew Stewart.
