Food Bank Stocks Depleted Amid Rising Demand

A food bank in Guernsey has reported that its supplies have become "extremely low" while experiencing an increase of two to three new clients each week.

The Guernsey Welfare Service, which operates the island's largest food bank, expressed these concerns in a rare social media post, requesting donations of specific items such as meat, pasta sauce, and tinned fruit.

Service manager Simon Fairclough highlighted the widespread financial difficulties affecting the community, noting that the current demand and stock shortages represent a "different level" compared to previous experiences.

"If we're unable to send a pensioner who lives on their own away with a jar of coffee, that's a pretty sad state of affairs."

Fairclough explained that the service does not often post on social media about stock needs, but the charity is now "really running low on things."

"People come in to take food away and there are some things we simply aren't able to give them.
Some are pretty stock items like granulated sugar, coffee and items like that. If we can't provide those basics, it's a bit of a concern."

He attributed the situation to rising living costs, acknowledging that "everybody is feeling the pinch."

"Our concern is that harder times may yet still come with inflation going up and the full effect of the war in the Middle East having not quite worked their way through yet,"
"Demand is staying high and growing two or three new clients a week at the moment. There's no getting away from that."

Items Needed by the Food Bank

The service has indicated that its stocks are running low on essential items including meat, pasta sauce, and tinned fruit.

Donations can be left in collection boxes located at Alliance, Coop Grand Marche, Smilers, or Waitrose.
