Former Miner Dies After Killing Terminally Ill Wife

A man who ended the life of his terminally ill wife in Cyprus has passed away.

David Hunter, aged 78, was charged with murdering his wife Janice, 74, in December 2021. However, he was ultimately convicted of manslaughter and served 19 months in prison.

The former miner, originally from Ashington, Northumberland, suffocated his wife at their home in Paphos. Janice was suffering from blood cancer, and Hunter stated that she had pleaded with him to end her life.

Hunter had recently been relocated to a care home on the island. He was also preparing for an appeal hearing initiated by the country's Attorney General, who contended that the sentence was too lenient.

Hunter had previously declared:

"I would never in a million years have suffocated my wife of 52 years unless she had asked me to."

He explained to the court that he decided to fulfill her wish after she became "hysterical."

Upon his release, Hunter expressed gratitude to his colliery community for their support.
