Fatal Shooting in Nantes Linked to Drug Trafficking

French prosecutors have reported that a 15-year-old boy was fatally shot and a 13-year-old boy seriously injured in a suspected drug-related shooting incident in the western city of Nantes.

According to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, the assailants were masked with balaclavas and armed with automatic weapons.

Minister Nuñez also confirmed that the 13-year-old victim and a third boy who sustained injuries are now out of danger.

Authorities Investigate Motive and Victims' Involvement

Nantes prosecutor Antoine Leroy stated,

"The shots were fired at three young men,"

and indicated that the attack was likely a settling of scores related to drug offenses.

However, Nuñez suggested the possibility that the victims may have been innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire, emphasizing,

"The motives behind this shooting, as the public prosecutor has stated, are very likely linked to drug trafficking,"
"That said... that does not mean that the individuals who were targeted, and a fortiori the person who died, were themselves involved in trafficking. I want to be absolutely clear on that."

Family Rejects Drug Involvement Claims

The 15-year-old boy's aunt, Paola, from the working-class Port-Boyer neighborhood of Nantes, strongly denied any involvement of her nephew with drugs.

She told reporters,

"He was not a criminal."
"You shouldn't mix everything up," said Paola. "He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. He wasn't involved in any of that; he had simply come to visit a friend."

Community Reaction and Scene Description

As people gathered near the police cordon, the mother of one of the victims was heard crying in despair from her car. The incident occurred in an area characterized by high-rise apartment blocks along the banks of the Erdre River.

Stella, 35, explained,

"The boys were on their way to their grandmother's house,"
"I was home when it happened. A police officer called me to bring my son back and tell me my nephew was injured."
"I feel like I'm in a nightmare and I'm angry because I almost lost my son."

Angeline, 18, described the event,

"I heard two bursts of around 10 gunshots, before seeing several people 'hooded and dressed in black' running through the grass."

Mayor Condemns Drug Trafficking and Calls for Police Action

The city's Mayor, Johanna Rolland, condemned the ongoing issue of drug trafficking affecting the country and highlighted the distress and intense emotion within the community, which had already been shaken by another fatal shooting at the end of the previous month.

In that earlier incident, a man was killed and another seriously wounded in the same area during a shooting also linked to drug trafficking. The assailant used a pistol and escaped the scene.

Mayor Rolland urged for comprehensive police efforts to apprehend the perpetrators of the recent shooting.

Government Response and Ongoing Efforts

Interior Minister Nuñez affirmed the government's commitment to combating drug trafficking, stating,

"We owe that to the victims, and we owe it to the residents of these neighbourhoods who are at the end of their tether, and... can no longer bear this drug trafficking,"
"The government would carry on the war against traffickers and continue to win battles."

Context of Youth Curfews and Rising Teen Involvement

In 2025, several French cities implemented night-time curfews targeting young people as a measure to reduce drug-related violence.

France's Ministry of Justice estimates that the number of teenagers involved in the illegal drug trade has increased more than four-fold over the past eight years.
