Fatal Plane Crash at Parafield Airport
Two individuals have died following a crash involving a small aircraft at Parafield Airport in Adelaide, South Australia, authorities confirmed.
The plane caught fire after colliding with a hangar on Wednesday afternoon local time.
South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas shared on social media that a
"number of others" have been injured.
Aircraft Details and Investigation
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) identified the aircraft as a twin-engine Diamond DA42 and has initiated an investigation into the incident.
According to the manufacturer's website, the Diamond DA42 model can accommodate up to four passengers.
Emergency Response and Airport Status
South Australian police issued a statement indicating that
"the immediate area has been evacuated as emergency services deal with the incident".
Parafield Airport also posted on social media describing the event as a
"serious incident"and confirmed it is
"providing full support to the emergency services in their response to this incident".
Premier Malinauskas expressed his condolences, stating on social media:
"My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have passed away, and with everyone affected by this devastating event".
He further reported that
"The fire in the hangar has now been extinguished, and the airfield has been closed,"adding that
"Emergency services remain on the scene and continue to respond with professionalism and urgency."
Airport Background and Previous Incidents
Parafield Airport primarily serves light aircraft and hosts several flight training schools. It ranks among Australia's busiest airports regarding aircraft movements.
In a related event earlier this year, a student pilot survived without injuries after their plane crashed and caught fire at the same airport in January.
