NSW Announces Additional Public Holiday for Anzac Day in 2026 and 2027

Chris Minns, the Premier of New South Wales, has revealed that the state will grant an extra public holiday in 2026 and 2027 when Anzac Day falls on a weekend. This decision ensures a long weekend for residents during these years and opens the possibility for more public holidays in the future.

While Anzac Day is observed nationally on 25 April, only Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory had previously provided an additional public holiday on the Monday following Anzac Day when it falls on a weekend. Unlike other major holidays such as New Year’s Day, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day, New South Wales had not declared an extra public holiday when Anzac Day coincided with a weekend.

Premier Minns Emphasizes Importance of Remembrance

Premier Minns addressed concerns about the impact of adding a public holiday on the tradition of Anzac Day, stating that it would not diminish its significance.

“If anything, it is a reminder of its importance and another reason for people to get up, attend a local service and ensure the spirit of remembrance continues to be passed on to the next generation,”

he said in a statement released on Sunday.

Support from Returned and Services League NSW

The Returned and Services League (RSL) NSW’s acting president, Vince Williams, expressed support for the additional holiday after consulting with members.

“Additionally, a public holiday on Monday will also provide many serving Australian Defence Force personnel who are required to work on Anzac Day itself with an opportunity to spend quality time with their loved ones,”

Williams said.

Public Holidays Across Australia and NSW’s Position

Anzac Day is one of ten public holidays recognized nationwide. However, New South Wales has fewer public holidays than all other mainland states and territories. Most Australians receive an additional three or four holidays beyond the nationwide ones, including residents of Victoria, Queensland, the ACT, and South Australia.

In contrast, New South Wales observes only two extra public holidays: the King’s Birthday in June and Labour Day in October. Christmas Island celebrates six additional holidays, including two for Lunar New Year in mid-February.

Future Considerations for Public Holidays in NSW

The Minns government plans to evaluate whether the Anzac Day public holiday change should become permanent. It will also review if the current number of statewide public holidays meets community needs.

This evaluation will consider the economic and social impacts of the extra public holiday in 2026 and 2027. The government will seek feedback from the community, businesses, and veteran groups before making a final decision.
