Fatal Shark Attack Confirmed off Queensland Coast
A man has died following a shark attack off the coast of Queensland, Australia, police have confirmed.
Emergency services responded to a boat ramp on the Cassowary Coast, located between Cairns and Townsville, shortly before noon local time on Sunday. The call was made after reports that a 39-year-old man was attacked while swimming near a nearby shoal.
Queensland Police issued a statement confirming the man was pulled from the water but succumbed to his injuries.
Second Fatal Shark Attack in Australian Waters This Month
This incident marks the second fatal shark attack in Australian coastal waters within a two-week period. The previous fatality involved a 38-year-old man who was killed while spearfishing near Perth, Western Australia, last Saturday.
In that earlier case, the man suffered bites to his lower legs and was unable to be revived.
Details and Investigation
Queensland Police have not disclosed the identity of the latest victim or specifics regarding the injuries sustained.
The police confirmed they will prepare a report for the coroner concerning the "sudden and non-suspicious" death.
"As the matter is before the coroner, it would be inappropriate to comment further," the police stated.
Context of Shark Attacks in Australia
Shark attacks are more frequent in Australian waters compared to many other regions globally, though fatalities are relatively rare.
According to the Australian Shark-Incident Database, there were four shark encounters across Australia in January, with only one resulting in death.
Popular swimming and surfing locations typically implement safety measures aimed at reducing the risk of shark attacks.
