Taliban Strike Targets Along Pakistan Border
Several individuals were reportedly injured in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province following strikes carried out by Afghanistan's Taliban regime on targets along the border with Pakistan.
Pakistan's military reported shooting down four rudimentary drones and issued a warning that any further provocations "would receive a befitting response." The BBC has not independently verified the reported attack.
Background of Escalating Tensions
The recent strikes follow Pakistan's airstrikes on Afghanistan on Sunday, which the United Nations reported resulted in the deaths of 28 civilians. This escalation comes after months of relative calm in the region. The two nations had agreed to a ceasefire in October after enduring weeks of deadly clashes.
Pakistan has long accused Afghanistan of harboring terrorists who conduct attacks within its borders, a charge the Taliban government denies. Conversely, Kabul has accused Islamabad of launching unprovoked attacks that have resulted in civilian casualties. Pakistan maintains that its operations target only militants.
Casualty Reports and Official Statements
Afghanistan stated that Pakistan's attack on Sunday struck civilian homes, placing the civilian death toll at 36 with over 160 injured. The Afghan government described the attack as a "cowardly act" and an "atrocity."
Pakistan confirmed conducting a ground operation along the border accompanied by airstrikes targeting militant hideouts in Afghanistan's Paktia, Paktika, and Kunar provinces. The country's information minister, Attaullah Tarar, declared that 29 militants were killed in an operation responding to "recent terrorist attacks against innocent people." The BBC has not independently confirmed casualty figures from either side.
Historical Context of Border Clashes
Intermittent clashes and airstrikes along the border have resulted in dozens of deaths in recent months, according to officials from both countries. In February, confrontations between the two nations caused dozens of fatalities. In March, a Pakistani strike on a drug rehabilitation center in Kabul resulted in hundreds of deaths.
Earlier in June, Pakistan launched deadly airstrikes that killed 26 militants. Afghanistan's Taliban government reported that 13 people, mostly children, were also killed during those strikes.
