Tragic Roof Collapse in Lahore Tutoring Centre

Fourteen children lost their lives when the roof of a tutoring centre collapsed in Lahore, a major city in eastern Pakistan, on Tuesday. Rescue officials reported the fatalities and authorities have initiated steps toward a possible negligence investigation.

Punjab’s emergency service confirmed that rescuers discovered children and a 30-year-old female teacher trapped beneath the rubble of the private after-school facility. The deceased children ranged in age from five to sixteen years old, with most being under nine.

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari stated that preliminary reports indicated the tutoring centre was unregistered and was operating inside a privately owned residential building with a dilapidated roof. Such tutoring centres are common throughout Pakistan, where children attend extra lessons beyond regular school hours.

"If negligence, carelessness or any violation of the law is established, those responsible will face strict legal action,"
Bokhari said in a statement.

Details of the Incident and Rescue Efforts

A witness told the AFP news agency that workers had been repairing tiles on the building when the roof suddenly gave way. Broadcaster Geo News aired footage showing uniformed rescuers and civilians using spades and their hands to dig through dirt and rubble in the partially collapsed building.

The uncle of one of the victims told AFP,

"The roof was in poor shape,"
adding that repair work was ongoing on tiles while the children were studying inside.

Authorities have pledged a thorough investigation. Provincial police reported on X that two individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the disaster. Police are collecting evidence at the scene and shared video footage of officers consulting with rescuers wearing hardhats at the building, which is located in a densely populated residential area.

Official Responses and Investigation

Marryam Khan, Lahore’s commissioner, issued a statement assuring the public that

"those responsible for the incident will be found through a transparent, unbiased and immediate investigation."

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his condolences and stated that he

"prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured and directed the authorities to provide them with every possible medical assistance,"
according to a statement from his office.

Context of Building Safety in Pakistan

Roof and building collapses are frequent occurrences in Pakistan, largely due to poor safety standards and the use of unsafe construction materials. In July of the previous year, 27 people were killed and 10 injured when a five-storey building collapsed in Lyari, an impoverished area of Karachi, a southern city in Pakistan.

The investigation into the Lahore tutoring centre collapse continues as authorities work to determine the causes and hold accountable those responsible.
