Seres Secures Patent for Innovative In-Vehicle Toilet

Chinese car manufacturer Seres has been granted a patent for an "in-vehicle toilet" designed to slide out from beneath a passenger's seat, providing a convenient solution for restroom needs while traveling. The patent was filed in China on 10 April and details a system intended to "satisfy users' toilet needs on long journeys, while camping or while staying in the car," according to engineers involved in the project.

Based in Chongqing, a city in south-west China, Seres has not yet announced plans to integrate this feature into any production vehicles, and it remains uncertain whether the in-car toilet will be commercially available.

Features and Functionality of the In-Car Toilet

The patent filing reveals that the toilet can be deployed by either pressing a button or using voice commands, enabling hands-free operation. The unit slides out from under the passenger seat, optimizing the use of interior vehicle space without requiring additional room.

To address hygiene and odor control, the toilet is equipped with a fan and an exhaust pipe that directs odors outside the vehicle. Waste is collected in a tank that requires manual emptying. Additionally, the toilet includes a rotating heating element designed to evaporate urine and dry other waste materials, enhancing sanitation.

When not in use, the toilet remains concealed beneath the seat, maintaining the vehicle's interior aesthetics and functionality.

Context and Industry Trends

In-vehicle toilets are uncommon and typically found in long-distance coaches rather than passenger cars. However, they are not entirely unprecedented; for instance, a special edition of the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith in the 1950s featured an integrated television set and a toilet beneath the passenger seat, as noted by auction house Sotheby's.

Seres and its subsidiary brand Aito specialize in electric sport utility vehicles (SUVs), which are larger vehicles with higher ground clearance and increased cargo capacity. While the majority of Seres' vehicles are sold within mainland China, the company has expanded its market reach to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Competitive Landscape and Market Challenges

The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market has become highly saturated, with numerous brands competing aggressively. This intense competition has led to a costly price war, eroding profit margins across the industry.

Despite these challenges, Seres is among the few Chinese EV manufacturers that have achieved profitability, alongside market leader BYD. Nonetheless, many analysts warn that a significant number of Chinese EV companies face the risk of collapse due to market pressures.
