Wegovy Pill Launches in UK Pharmacies

Thousands of individuals in the UK have started receiving their initial shipments of the once-daily Wegovy weight-loss pill, manufactured by the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk. This medication, containing the active GLP-1 ingredient semaglutide, is the same as that found in the Wegovy injection and has demonstrated similar effectiveness in clinical studies.

The pill, which was approved on 11 June, is available for private prescription to overweight or obese patients following a medical consultation. It is intended to be used alongside a healthy diet and exercise regimen. However, unlike the injectable form, the pill is not yet accessible via NHS prescriptions.

Warnings About Fake Online Pills

Authorities have issued warnings regarding the risks posed by counterfeit pills sold through online platforms. Megan Rannard, from the intellectual property law firm Marks & Clerk, stated:

“There are a large number of websites that falsely claim to be legitimate online pharmacies and that advertise medication to the public without a consultation or a prescription, and at very low prices.
There is a risk that these types of websites will sell consumers counterfeit pharmaceuticals which present a clear public health risk, or that these websites are a simply a front for other types of fraud or phishing scams.”

Market Context and Pricing

Since its launch in the United States earlier this year, the Wegovy pill has gained popularity. Another pharmaceutical company, Eli Lilly, introduced its own weight-loss pill, Foundayo (orforglipron), in early April. Both pills are priced lower than the injectable weight-loss medications.

In the UK, the cost of the Wegovy pill is approximately £2.30 per day under certain multi-month treatment plans offered by some online pharmacies. Prices vary from £69 for a month’s supply as part of a three-month bundle for the 1.5mg starting dose, up to £189 for the highest 25mg dose.

For comparison, Wegovy injections are sold online at prices ranging from £79 to £250 per month depending on dosage, while Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro injection costs between £54 and £300 monthly.

Usage and Patient Guidance

Abdal Alvi, chief clinical officer at Simple Online Pharmacy, commented on the significance of the pill’s availability:

“The Wegovy pill is a major development because it gives patients another way to access semaglutide without self-injecting. But it is not a tablet you can simply take with breakfast or your morning coffee. The way it is taken has a direct impact on how well the medication is absorbed, so patients need to understand the routine from day one.”

The pill must be taken with a sip of water on an empty stomach after fasting for at least eight hours. After ingestion, patients are required to wait at least 30 minutes before consuming any food, drink, or other medications.

Prior to the pill’s launch, tens of thousands of people registered on the waiting list for an initial consultation at the online pharmacy Juniper UK.

Convenience and Clinical Trial Results

Pharmacists note that the pill provides a more convenient alternative for individuals who are apprehensive about injections, travel frequently, or prefer a daily tablet over a weekly injection.

Clinical trials have shown that patients taking the 25mg daily dose of the Wegovy pill experienced significant weight loss over a 64-week period, contingent on adherence to the treatment regimen.

Side Effects and Reporting

The most frequently reported side effects of the Wegovy pill are gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, and vomiting. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) advises anyone experiencing side effects to consult their doctor, pharmacist, or nurse and to report adverse effects directly to the MHRA.
