Three Young Stroke Survivors Aim to Support Others and Share Their Experiences
Cari Davies, Mererid Rees, and Nia Tyler are three young women from Carmarthenshire who survived strokes in early adulthood. They are working together to create opportunities for connection and sharing among others facing similar challenges.
Mererid Rees and Cari Davies first met while recovering on a hospital ward after their strokes. Later, they reached out to Nia Tyler through social media, forming a close friendship. The trio is now organizing a special event in Cardiff this year to bring together other young stroke survivors.
Three Friends Want Young Survivors to Know There Is "Life After Stroke"
Nia Tyler was only 20 years old when she suffered a stroke while studying at university. Afterward, she returned home to recover, facing a difficult period of fatigue and loneliness. Although her life has changed significantly since then, the professional singer has rebuilt her confidence and found support through her friendship with Mererid and Cari.
"Mae ganddo ni ddealltwriaeth tawel o'n gilydd," she said.
"Er bod ein straeon ni'n wahanol, mae rhyw fath o berthynas unigryw rhyngddo ni fel goroeswyr strôc.
"Ar y pryd o ni'n teimlo fel yr unig person ifanc yn y byd oedd 'di cael strôc.
"Yn amlwg nid dyna'r realiti, ond fi'n teimlo llawer llai yn unig nawr wrth cwrdd â phobl eraill ar-lein."
Stroke Changed Life of Woman at 21, But Support and Hope Remain
Mererid, known as Mez, led a very different life before her stroke in 2021. At 30 years old, she was working as a dancer in Dubai when she suffered the stroke and had to return home. She spent months recovering on a hospital ward, where she met Cari for the first time.
"Dwi'n cofio'r nyrsys yn dweud bod person ifanc arall wedi cael strôc," she recalled.
"Roeddwn i'n falch o wybod o'n i ddim ar fy mhen fy hun, ond ar yr un pryd yn drist bod rhywun arall mor ifanc yn mynd drwy'r un peth."
Since then, Mererid has documented her journey online, hoping to inspire others.
"Mae bywyd ar ôl strôc," she said. "Efallai bod pethau'n edrych yn wahanol, ond gallwch chi barhau i fwynhau bywyd a gwneud y pethau sy'n bwysig i chi."

Sharing Experiences to Help Others
For Cari Davies, who had a stroke in 2022, these connections have been vital.
"Mae'n deimlad arbennig, achos ni gyd yn gallu uniaethu gyda'n gilydd," she said.
"Mae'r digwyddiad eleni yn ddathliad o'n teithiau ni, ond hefyd yn ffordd o roi rhywbeth yn ôl.
"Rydyn ni eisiau dangos i bobl sydd yn yr ysbyty nawr nad yw gobaith wedi diflannu, a rhoi cyfle iddyn nhw gwrdd â phobl sy'n deall yn iawn beth maen nhw'n mynd drwyddo."
Together, the three hope their experiences will help other young people taking their first steps toward recovery feel less isolated.
