Programme to Connect Urban Residents with Nature Receives Funding

A programme designed to bring wildlife closer to city dwellers has been awarded funding from the National Lottery.

Wildlife and Wellbeing, an organisation based in Salisbury, has secured £5,000 to host events in green spaces near the city centre during 2026 and 2027. The initiative aims to enhance people's wellbeing through engagement with nature.

"There are lovely green spaces in Salisbury and river walks as well where people can go out and connect with nature, which is really good for our wellbeing."

Research Highlights Connection to Nature

According to research conducted by Natural England in 2025, while most individuals acknowledge the positive effects of nature on happiness, only approximately half report feeling a strong connection to it.

Encouraging Greater Engagement with Nature

Whyte noted that many people may not be fully benefiting from what nature offers:

"A lot of people maybe aren't making the most of what nature can offer them.
Go out with a bat detector and listen to the noises bat makes, or a summer solstice celebration to watch the sunset and notice what wildlife is around at twilight."

Future Funding and Contact Information

Whyte also indicated that the project will continue seeking funding to extend the events beyond 2027.
