Wind Farm Plans Submitted Near Loch Ryan
Plans for a wind farm near Loch Ryan in the south-west corner of Scotland have been submitted to the Scottish government.
Developer Wind Estate proposes to construct seven turbines, each reaching up to 200m (650ft) in height, located approximately three miles (5km) north-east of Cairnryan.
The proposed site, situated immediately north of the Penwhirn reservoir, would also include a battery energy storage system (BESS).
A planning statement indicated that the project has the potential to supply the energy needs of more than 50,000 homes.
Environmental and Conservation Considerations
The site lies within the transition zone of the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere Reserve.
It is also adjacent to the Glen App Special Protection Area (SPA) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), both designated for the protection of breeding hen harriers.
Project Impact and Benefits
The company responsible for the plans stated that the development could make a
"significant contribution"to Scotland's commitment to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions.
Additionally, it noted that the project would create approximately 20 jobs during its operational phase and is expected to be functional for 40 years.
Background on Penwhirn Reservoir
An £8 million project to raise the height of the nearby Penwhirn dam was completed more than a decade ago.
This followed concerns over water supplies and the possibility of a drought order in 2010.
Raising the dam's height by 1.5m (about 5ft) increased the reservoir's capacity by nearly 40%.
The Penwhirn reservoir provides water to much of Wigtownshire, including the towns of Stranraer, Leswalt, Portpatrick, Newton Stewart, and Creetown.
