Robert Plant Spotted at Historic Record Store

Led Zeppelin icon Robert Plant recently surprised shoppers as he was seen crate digging in Spillers Records, the world's oldest record store. The legendary band, which was among the most influential globally in the 1970s, has a longstanding connection with Wales.

In 1970, Led Zeppelin relocated to Bron Yr Aur cottage near Machynlleth, Powys, where within three months they composed the album 'Led Zeppelin III'.

Record Store Day Recognition

With Record Store Day scheduled for 18 April, Robert Plant has been designated this year's "record store legend." The 77-year-old chose to have his commemorative plaque installed at Spillers Records, located in Cardiff's Morgan Arcade.

Plant, referring to himself humorously as Record Store Day's "director of organisations and prosecutions," praised Spillers as an institution.

"Quite a lot of my friends were based either around Rockfield Studios, up in Monmouth, or in this area.
So there was always a meeting point. Why not pop in here? And then perhaps a pint of Brains, I don't know.
The people who were looking after the stores were as keen as we were to dig in, get the groove of it all.
And I never, very, very seldom, did I ever have any money to buy anything, but I listened to a lot of music, thanks to the people in the store."

He described the record store as "hallowed territory," emphasizing its cultural significance during his youth.

"It belonged to us as a youth culture then. It had its own language, it was a place to hang out. Meet girls!"

"Record shops of the world will know first-hand that above all, Robert Plant is a connoisseur of his craft whose appetite for musical discoveries has not waned with the passage of time."

She added that it was a privilege for Spillers to host the plaque honoring Plant as a record store legend.

In conjunction with Record Store Day 2026, Robert Plant is releasing an exclusive four-track EP titled Saving Grace: All That Glitters.
