World Cup Final Half-Time Show Lineup Announced
Madonna, Shakira, and the K-pop group BTS will co-headline the half-time show at the World Cup final, scheduled to take place in New Jersey on 19 July. This event marks the first-ever half-time show at a World Cup final, aligning with the tradition of pre-match performances at major sporting events such as the Champions League final.
The 2026 World Cup is set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with the final match held in New Jersey. The inclusion of a half-time show represents a new entertainment feature for the tournament.
Artists and Their Contributions
Colombian singer Shakira, known for her global hits, is releasing her official World Cup song titled Dai Dai on Thursday. The title is an Italian phrase meaning "let's go" or "come on" and features Nigerian artist Burna Boy. Shakira, aged 49, previously gained international acclaim with her 2010 World Cup song Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) for the tournament held in South Africa.
Madonna, often referred to as the 'Queen of Pop' and recognized as the best-selling female music artist of all time, is preparing to release her 15th studio album, Confessions II, on 3 July. The 67-year-old artist recently made a surprise guest appearance during Sabrina Carpenter's headline set at the Coachella music festival in April, performing a duet of her hits "Vogue" and "Like A Prayer."
BTS, the seven-member South Korean boy band, holds the record as the best-selling music act in South Korean history, with over 45 million albums sold. The group collaborated with Coldplay on the 2021 UK number three hit "My Universe." After a three-year hiatus to fulfill mandatory military service, BTS is currently on an 85-date world tour and will perform at the World Cup final during this period.
Event Significance and Charity Initiative
FIFA president Gianni Infantino emphasized the importance of the show in March, stating:
"The show will be a historic moment for the FIFA World Cup, befitting the biggest sporting event in the world."
The half-time show has been curated by Coldplay's Chris Martin and aims to raise funds for the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund. This initiative seeks to generate $100 million (£73 million) to support children worldwide.
