Jorginho's Background and Incident Overview
Jorginho, known for his achievements including the European Championship with Italy and Champions League and Europa League titles with Chelsea, has recently drawn significant attention on social media. The former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder, now playing for Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro, posted a critical message on Instagram regarding an incident involving pop singer Chappell Roan and his 11-year-old daughter.
The Italy international, who holds dual Brazilian citizenship, described a distressing event that took place during breakfast at a hotel in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Jorginho explained that his daughter, a devoted fan of Chappell Roan, had prepared a sign to bring to the Lollapalooza music festival in Sao Paulo, where Roan was a headlining act.
Details of the Incident
According to Jorginho, while his daughter was eating near the singer, she recognized Roan, smiled, and returned to her seat without initiating any interaction. However, he stated that the reaction from Roan's security was excessive.
"What happened next was completely disproportionate,"
Jorginho wrote, describing how a large security guard approached their table aggressively, addressing both his wife, Catherine Harding, and his daughter. The guard allegedly accused his daughter of disrespecting or harassing others and threatened to file a complaint with the hotel.
"He even said he would file a complaint against them with the hotel, while my 11-year-old daughter was sitting there in tears. My daughter was extremely shaken and cried a lot."
Chappell Roan's Response
Chappell Roan responded to the allegations on Sunday afternoon via an Instagram video. She expressed sympathy for the mother and child but clarified that she was unaware of the incident and that it did not involve her personal security team.
"I didn't even see a woman and child - no-one came up to me, no-one bothered me,"
said the American singer.
"I was just sitting at breakfast in my hotel...I did not ask the security guard to go up and talk to this mother and child. They did not come up to me. They weren't doing anything. It's unfair for security to just assume someone doesn't have good intentions when they have no reason to believe [that] because there is no action even taken.
"I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children, that is crazy.
"I am sorry to the mother and child that someone was assuming something, that you were doing something. If you felt uncomfortable that makes me really sad. You did not deserve that."
Jorginho's Perspective and Career Highlights
Prior to Roan's response, Jorginho acknowledged his understanding of public scrutiny, having earned 57 caps for Italy and contributing to their 2021 European Championship victory against England at Wembley.
He has also achieved success with top clubs across Europe and Brazil, including winning the Champions League and Europa League with Chelsea and securing trophies with Napoli in Italy.
Despite this, Jorginho emphasized the importance of respect and boundaries, asserting that the incident did not reflect these values.
"I understand very well what respect and boundaries are. What happened there was not that. It was just a child admiring someone.
"It's sad to see this kind of treatment coming from those who should understand the importance of fans. At the end of the day, they are the ones who build all of this.
"I sincerely hope this serves as a moment of reflection. No-one should have to go through this, especially not a child."
He concluded his post with a direct message to Chappell Roan in capital letters:
"WITHOUT YOUR FANS, YOU WOULD BE NOTHING. AND TO THE FANS, SHE DOES NOT DESERVE YOUR AFFECTION."
Public Reaction and Additional Context
The incident, described by some commentators as an "unexpected beef," sparked a wide range of responses on social media, with many expressing support for Jorginho and his family. Reactions varied from serious to humorous.
Eduardo Cavaliere, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, announced intentions to ban Chappell Roan from performing in the city. He also stated that Jorginho's daughter would be invited as a guest of honour to the Todo Mundo music festival scheduled for May.
Some commentators referenced Roan's previous remarks about fans exhibiting "creepy" and "stalker-like behaviour." Others made light of the situation by questioning the Grammy Award winner's qualifications to play in the Premier League.
