Drake Releases Three Albums Simultaneously

The world anticipated a single Drake album, but the Canadian rapper surprised fans by releasing three albums at once. The releases include his long-awaited solo record, Iceman, along with two additional albums titled Habibti and Maid of Honour, comprising a total of 43 songs.

These albums feature collaborations with artists such as Central Cee, 21 Savage, and PARTYNEXTDOOR. This marks Drake's first album releases since his feud with US rapper Kendrick Lamar intensified in 2024. Notably, Drake addresses this ongoing conflict within his new music.

He raps on the new record, questioning whether the "iceman" persona replaces the "nice man" image.

Musical Styles Across the Albums

Drake's three albums showcase a variety of musical styles. Iceman focuses primarily on rap and hip-hop, Habibti leans towards R&B, and Maid of Honour draws inspiration from dance music.

Addressing the Kendrick Lamar Feud

A key question surrounding the release was whether Drake would use his new music to reignite his feud with Kendrick Lamar. He appears to reference Lamar with pointed lyrics, accusing him of using his hometown of Compton, Los Angeles, as a backdrop for charitable acts while retreating to a celebrity lifestyle elsewhere.

"Handin' out turkeys on camera inside of your hood, then you go back to the hills,"

he raps on one track.

On the Iceman album opener, "Make Them Cry," Drake offers insight into his mindset during the peak of their conflict.

"Tell us how it felt to meet the grim reaper / This album better have some big features / Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but I'm all alone for my mental [health],"

he raps.

Drake also appears to call out other rappers and celebrities perceived to have sided with Lamar. On one track, he seemingly targets Los Angeles Lakers basketball player LeBron James, who attended a Lamar concert during the height of the feud.

Reception and Streaming Impact

Most critics have yet to publish reviews of Iceman and Drake's other new albums. However, reports indicate that streaming platforms experienced crashes and slowdowns as fans rushed to listen to the new music.

Spittin' fire? Critics have been slow to weigh in on Drake's bumper music drop

When beat spoke with music journalist and radio presenter Mary Mandefield about Drake's releases, she was still processing the extensive drop.

"He's a smart businessman, as well as a great musician,"

she said.

"It would have been a massive miss to have three albums and not to mention Kendrick at all."

Mandefield noted that fans had been anticipating Drake's response to Lamar's diss track "Not Like Us," which Lamar performed memorably at last year's Super Bowl halftime show.

She added that while the feud is often framed as a battle, both artists have benefited from the attention.

"It keeps people talking about it, it helps with streaming numbers,"

she explained.

"Externally it looks like beef, but on the whole, it helps both artists out."

Streaming Strategy and Industry Context

Releasing 43 tracks simultaneously may lead to accusations of "stream trolling," a strategy where multiple songs are published to boost overall streaming figures.

Mandefield suggested that if Drake aims to increase his streaming numbers, offering three albums with distinct sounds could broaden his appeal.

She also pointed out that Drake is not alone in this approach; rap group Migos released a 24-track album, and R&B artist Chris Brown issued a 57-track deluxe edition of Heartbreak on a Full Moon, both facing similar accusations.

"Other artists would do this in a way where they might have a remix album, or they might do an acoustic version,"

Mandefield said.

She acknowledged that releasing three albums simultaneously "feels excessive," but added,

"But I would not be surprised to see this more in the future."

Promotion and Hype Surrounding the Albums

Drake built anticipation for Iceman through a series of livestream events. Each episode featured new music, guest appearances from collaborators, and included easter eggs and references hinting at the themes of the full release.

At the conclusion of episode four, broadcast shortly before Iceman was released, Drake teased the triple album drop with a closing shot showing three hard drives. He was also seen destroying a bot farm that appeared to show multiple phones streaming Kendrick Lamar's Grammy-winning diss track, "Not Like Us."

Both rappers have accused each other of using bots to artificially inflate streaming figures, a topic mentioned in Drake's lawsuit against his label, Universal Music Group, which was ultimately dismissed.

Drake has also staged several promotional stunts to generate excitement for Iceman. His courtside seat at the Toronto Raptors' stadium was recently decorated with icicles. The previous month, a large pile of ice blocks appeared in Toronto with the album's release date encased inside.

Firefighters were eventually required to melt the ice sculpture after fans attempted to thaw it with blowtorches and chip away at it with sledgehammers.

He followed this by illuminating the Toronto landmark CN Tower in blue during the broadcast of episode four of his livestream.
