Blas Festival Seeks Continued Highland Council Funding

A festival established over two decades ago to celebrate Highland and Gaelic culture is poised to receive ongoing financial support from the local authority.

Blas began as a modest event in 2004, held in Strontian, Clashmore, and Strathpeffer, and has since expanded to include concerts and ceilidhs at numerous venues throughout the Highlands.

Financial challenges have arisen in the past, prompting organisers Fèisean nan Gàidheal to request additional funding over the years.

The Highland Council's Gaelic committee has been asked to approve the continuation of local authority funding, with the understanding that all future allocations will be subject to annual review.

In a report submitted to the committee, council officers stated that Blas makes a

to Highland communities.

However, they also noted that the festival's capacity to attract external funding depends significantly on the support it receives from the council.

The officers emphasized:

"Any reduction or withdrawal of this funding would place the wider funding package at risk."

Councillors are scheduled to review the report and its recommendations regarding continued funding and enhanced cooperation between the council and Blas during their meeting on Wednesday.

The festival takes place each September, with traditional music and the Gaelic language featuring prominently in its programme.

Past performers have included notable artists such as Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis and composer and fiddle player Duncan Chisholm.
