Ralph Fiennes on Reprising Voldemort Role

Ralph Fiennes has expressed interest in reprising his role as Voldemort, the arch enemy of Harry Potter, but he believes the opportunity has passed.

The British actor portrayed the villainous character in the original Harry Potter film franchise from 2005 to 2011.

Currently, an HBO television adaptation of the popular book series is in production. While most of the new cast has been announced, the role of Voldemort remains unconfirmed.

During an appearance on BBC's The Claudia Winkleman Show, Fiennes reflected on the possibility of returning to the role:

"I remember being asked the question 'would I reprise the part?' This was some years ago. And I said: 'Yes, I'd love to.'"

However, he added that since then, "nothing's happened" and he feels "that ship has sailed."

Last month, HBO chief Casey Bloys told the US publication Variety that the actor for Voldemort had not yet been cast.

Several actors have been rumored for the role, including Doctor Strange star Tilda Swinton and Peaky Blinders actor Cillian Murphy.

When asked about Swinton possibly being cast, Bloys advised against believing rumors, stating,

"I don't even know who we're casting."

Earlier this year, Murphy dismissed speculation about taking on the role, telling The Times,

"I'm categorically not. Can you make that the headline?"

Regarding Swinton's potential casting, Fiennes told The Claudia Winkleman Show that he thinks she would be

New Cast and Returning Actors

The main trio for the new series has been cast, with Scottish actor Dominic McLaughlin set to portray Harry Potter.

He will be joined by Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger.

The original film franchise featured Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint in these lead roles.

While the TV adaptation introduces many new actors, Warwick Davis will return to reprise his role as Professor Filius Flitwick.

Series Details and Reception

The first installment of the series will be titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, based on J.K. Rowling's first book in the acclaimed series.

Some cast members have addressed criticism related to their involvement, stemming from opposition to Rowling's views on transgender rights.

Paapa Essiedu, who plays Severus Snape, revealed to the BBC that he has received death threats from individuals objecting to a Black actor portraying the character.

"I'd be lying if I said I was a completely impenetrable robot,"

he said. However, he noted that since the trailer's release last month,

"there's been a flood of positivity" and "people are being incredibly supportive of the show and my involvement in it and that makes me excited for what is to come."

Release Information

The first series is scheduled to premiere at Christmas 2026 on HBO Max.
