Doctor Who Christmas Special Cancelled
The BBC has cancelled the planned Christmas special of Doctor Who as it prepares for the next phase of the iconic sci-fi series.
Last year, the corporation announced a festive special scheduled for 2026, but on Wednesday it revealed that the episode will no longer proceed. Instead, the BBC is inviting production companies to submit proposals to co-produce the upcoming series.
In an official statement, the BBC said the decision to cancel the Christmas episode was made "after careful consideration" and "had not been taken lightly."
Showrunner Russell T Davies also confirmed his departure from the long-running programme. Writing on Instagram, he stated:
"It is goodbye from me but hello to a big new future for the show."
Regarding the previously announced Christmas special, Davies explained:
"We only cooked that up to guarantee a future when no one knew what would happen, but now we do know, there's no need for it.
You'll have to wait a bit longer for new Doctor Who... but you'll be waiting for more Doctor Who than a one-off. So it's worth it!
For the record: there was no script, I never wrote it, and no actor was ever approached to play the next Doctor."
Recent Series and Cast Changes
The most recent series of Doctor Who aired in May 2025 and marked the final season starring Ncuti Gatwa, who had announced his departure after two series. The finale featured his Doctor's regeneration and concluded with the surprise return of Billie Piper, who originally portrayed Rose Tyler.
At the time, it was unclear whether Piper would assume the role of the next Doctor. The BBC stated only that "just how and why she is back remains to be seen."
Production and Distribution Developments
Since 2023, Doctor Who has been co-produced by Cardiff-based production company Bad Wolf. Additionally, the BBC entered a partnership with Disney+ to co-produce and distribute the show internationally.
However, Disney's involvement ended in 2025 after 26 episodes, with confirmation that the company would no longer participate in the series.
BBC's Announcement on Future Plans
On Wednesday, the BBC announced both the cancellation of the Christmas special and details regarding the next era of Doctor Who. The corporation stated that the decision was made collectively with Davies and Bad Wolf not to proceed with the planned Christmas episode.
"This decision was not taken lightly, and we know it will be disappointing for fans," the BBC said.
"But in order to set the show up for future series, it was decided that, rather than bridge the gap with a one off special, we are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show which ensures that when the Tardis lands once more, it does so in all its glory."
The BBC described the plan as "part of securing the next phase of the show for future generations."
A BBC spokesman emphasized that the programme "remains an important part of the BBC" and that putting the show out to competitive tender "underpins the BBC's continued commitment to Doctor Who."
The corporation noted that the tender process aligns with its Charter and Agreement requirements.
In his Instagram post, Davies expressed enthusiasm for the future of the series:
"I am as excited as anyone to see what comes next!
Will they keep the theme tune? Will they lose the blue box? Will they bring back the Drahvin?! It's all up for grabs, which is so Doctor Who, exciting and unpredictable and new! Here comes the future."
Additional Developments
A previously announced new Doctor Who animation series for CBeebies remains in production.
