UK Government Supports Universal Studios Theme Park Development

British taxpayers will contribute £1.3 billion in funding to assist the Hollywood studio giant Universal in establishing its first European theme park.

Comcast, the US media corporation that owns NBC Universal and Sky, had been evaluating several countries as potential locations for the project. Ultimately, an agreement was reached to build the attraction on the site of the former Kempston Hardwick brickworks near Bedford, following a substantial offer of government financial support.

A package initially disclosed in June of the previous year included investments such as a station development at Wixams, while negotiations regarding the overall scale of government assistance continued.

On Wednesday, the government announced a comprehensive £1.3 billion support package. This includes £400 million allocated through the regional growth fund and a £438 million grant from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport aimed at investing in new community infrastructure to maximize the development's benefits and support regional growth.

The Department for Transport is contributing an estimated £474 million towards strategic road and rail projects in the area.

As part of the agreement, which involved Chancellor Rachel Reeves visiting the proposed site on Wednesday, Comcast has committed to investing more than £5 billion in the new entertainment complex over a five-year construction period.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

“This landmark investment in the heart of the Oxford-to-Cambridge growth corridor will unlock nearly £50bn of economic growth and create tens of thousands of jobs across Bedfordshire in construction, hospitality, creative and technology sectors,”
said Reeves.

The government has projected that the theme park will generate 20,000 construction jobs and an additional 8,000 roles once operational.

The theme park, to be named the Universal United Kingdom Resort, is scheduled to open in 2031 and is expected to attract approximately 8.5 million visitors in its inaugural year.

Comcast has also pledged an additional £1 billion in capital investment in the resort over the first ten years of operation.

“This historic partnership is a special moment for our company as we bring our first Universal theme park and resort to Europe,”
said Brian Roberts, chair of Comcast.
“We have a long and proud history in the UK through Sky and NBC Universal and look forward to creating a spectacular destination that supports the UK creative industries and brings joy to millions for generations to come.”
