UK Economy Contracts in April

The UK's economy experienced a contraction of 0.1% in April, according to the latest official figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The ONS attributed this decline primarily to a reduction in output within the key services sector. However, this downturn was partially balanced by an increase in construction activity during the same period.

Analysts had anticipated a slight contraction for April, following stronger-than-expected economic growth in March. The March growth was influenced by consumers advancing their spending due to concerns related to the war in the Middle East.

Looking at a broader timeframe, the ONS reported that the economy grew by 0.7% in the three months leading up to April when compared with the preceding three-month period.
