Government Encourages Price Caps in Exchange for Regulatory Relief

UK supermarkets are being encouraged by the government to voluntarily limit food prices in return for easing certain regulations, according to information obtained by the BBC.

Sources within the retail industry familiar with the plans indicate that any price caps would be voluntary and would focus on essential grocery items such as eggs, bread, and milk.

In return, the Treasury may consider relaxing packaging policies and potentially postponing upcoming rule changes related to healthy food standards.

Supermarket Opposition and Official Responses

Supermarkets are reportedly strongly opposed to these proposals. The Treasury has declined to provide any comment on the matter.

The proposals were initially reported by the Financial Times and follow the Scottish National Party's (SNP) announcement last month to introduce a similar price cap in Scotland. However, the SNP's price cap would not be voluntary.

One retailer characterized the government's idea as

"crazy" and the act of a "desperate" government.
