Spotify Launches 'Verified' Badge to Confirm Human Artists
Spotify is rolling out a new 'Verified' badge designed to help users distinguish human artists from AI-generated profiles on its platform.
The leading music streaming service announced that a green checkmark icon accompanied by the text 'Verified by Spotify' will appear next to artist names once they satisfy "defined standards demonstrating authenticity."
These standards may include linked social media accounts on the artist's profile, consistent listener engagement, or other indicators of a genuine artist behind the profile, such as merchandise sales or scheduled concert dates, according to the company.
In a blog post, Spotify stated that "more than 99%" of artists actively searched for by listeners will be verified, representing "hundreds of thousands of artists."
The verification process will prioritize artists with "important contributions to music culture and history," rather than "content farms." The platform plans to gradually implement verification and badges over the coming weeks.

Discussion on Verification and AI-Generated Music
As Spotify targets AI-generated music and personas, some social media users have noted that a verified account only confirms the artist is human, not that the music itself was created without AI assistance.
Ed Newton-Rex, a campaigner for creators' rights and former AI executive, commented that Spotify's approach could "punish real human artists who don't have some of the markers the verification is based on," such as touring or selling merchandise.
He suggested that Spotify might instead consider "automatically labelling any AI-generated music," similar to measures taken by other streaming services.
Nick Collins, Professor of Music at the University of Durham, described Spotify's decision as "unsurprising" given the "ongoing furore around generative AI," but noted that labeling the music itself would be more challenging.
"AI usage is not a binary position between 'entirely authentically handmade' and 'fully AI generated' but can have lots of in-between cases," he explained.
"We can probably welcome some sort of tagging system like this, though it may favour the more commercial and successful artists already active rather than new independent artists."
Spotify's Challenges with AI-Generated Content
Spotify has faced criticism in recent years regarding its handling of AI-generated content on its platform.
For example, a software developer based in Leipzig created a tool to identify and block AI music on Spotify.
Users in Spotify's community forums have frequently requested a "clear label for AI-generated songs" or explanations on "why rs should pay full price while the platform fills up with AI-generated music."
In 2023, Spotify's then CEO Daniel Ek told the BBC that he had no plans to completely ban AI-created content from the platform.
In 2025, the band The Velvet Sundown, which had a verified page on Spotify with 850,000 monthly listeners, faced accusations of being AI-generated after it was revealed they had never given interviews or performed live.
Their profile now identifies them as a "synthetic music project... with the support of artificial intelligence," and they currently have 126,000 monthly listeners.
