Early Career and Notable Roles
Actor Sam Neill, who has died at the age of 78, was best known for starring in the Jurassic Park movies, which represented only a portion of his extensive and diverse career spanning Hollywood blockbusters and critically acclaimed arthouse films.
One of his significant early roles was portraying the adult antichrist Damien in the 1981 film The Omen III.

In 1990, Neill appeared alongside Sir Sean Connery in the submarine thriller The Hunt For Red October.

He also featured in Jane Campion's Oscar-winning 1993 drama The Piano.

Jurassic Park and Franchise Legacy
Neill is most widely remembered for his role as Dr Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg's 1993 science fiction adventure Jurassic Park.

He starred alongside Jeff Goldblum, Martin Ferrero, Laura Dern, and Richard Attenborough, sharing the screen with numerous dinosaurs.

Neill reprised his role as the palaeontologist in Jurassic Park III in 2001.

Following a lengthy hiatus, the franchise was revived with a new cast in the Jurassic World trilogy starting in 2015. However, the original stars, including Neill, returned for a final appearance in 2022's Jurassic World Dominion.
Other Significant Roles
Beyond the Jurassic Park series, Neill ventured into space in the 1997 science fiction thriller Event Horizon.

He portrayed the title character in the fantasy adventure television series Merlin in 1998 and its follow-up in 2006.

More recently, Neill was seen as the ruthless Major Chester Campbell in the BBC television series Peaky Blinders.

His other screen credits include the mystery drama series Apples Never Fall, where he starred alongside Annette Bening.
