Project Hail Mary Achieves Record-Breaking Box Office Success
Ryan Gosling's sci-fi space adventure Project Hail Mary has soared to $140.9 million (£122m) at the global box office, marking it as the biggest debut of 2026 so far.
The Canadian actor stars as a science teacher charged with saving the world from extinction.
This new release surpassed Scream 7, which was the year's previous top seller overall, and also overtook Creed III in achieving the fastest start for an Amazon MGM Studios production.
Film Direction and Story Background
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for their collaborations on 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, Project Hail Mary follows a former molecular biologist who unexpectedly embarks on a critical intergalactic mission.
The narrative is adapted from the best-selling novel by Andy Weir, whose earlier book The Martian inspired Ridley Scott's 2015 film starring Matt Damon, which received seven Oscar nominations.
Statements from Amazon MGM and Ryan Gosling
In a statement obtained by Variety, Amazon MGM's distribution head Kevin Wilson remarked on the novel's impact:
"The novel had given us a powerful foundation before the directors created a visually stunning, heart-gripping film."
He also praised Gosling, known for roles in Barbie and La La Land:
"Ryan Gosling is a singular star that has the massive global appeal and charisma to anchor a story like this."
Speaking to 's Annabel Rackham about the $200 million-budgeted project, lead actor and producer Gosling emphasized the role of humor in the film:
"That's part of the reason why I wanted to produce [this film], because I felt like I needed to create an environment where these things could co-exist."
Box Office Rankings and Industry Impact
Project Hail Mary ranks as the third-biggest non-sequel and non-franchise film to open above $50 million overseas since the Covid pandemic, alongside Oppenheimer and F1: The Movie.
Five years after Amazon acquired MGM for £8 million, the company appears to have secured its first major commercial success, positioning itself competitively among leading streaming services.
Critical Reception
BBC Culture film critic Nicolas Barber described the space epic as:
"a mind-stretching sci-fi" that manages to be "zippily entertaining" throughout.
Empire magazine called it:
"witty, wise and preposterously entertaining."
However, Variety critiqued the film as:
"too generic" and "incredibly derivative of movies like Interstellar."
noted:
"there are moments of dullness and puppyish silliness" but "Gosling is an effortlessly charming screen player" who keeps the film "watchable."
Amazon MGM's Recent and Upcoming Projects
Amazon MGM's recent productions include Melania, a film about the US First Lady, and the R-rated thriller Crime 101. The studio's upcoming release, Masters of the Universe, is scheduled for June.
