Chart Battle Among Kneecap, Melanie C, and Michael Jackson

What do an Irish language rap group, Sporty Spice, and the King of Pop have in common? They are all competing for the number one position in the official UK album chart this Friday.

The three-way contest between Kneecap, Melanie C, and Michael Jackson surfaced in the midweek chart update, with the Official Charts Company reporting that Kneecap was currently leading.

Kneecap's Potential Milestone

The album Fenian, released earlier this month, could become the first ever number one album on the UK charts for the trio, known as Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí.

Kneecap's previous release, 2024's Fine Art, reached number 43 in the UK and number two in the Republic of Ireland.

Melanie C's Solo Chart History

This could also mark a first for former Spice Girl Melanie C, who has never achieved a solo UK number one album.

The LP Sweat is her ninth studio album, and her best solo chart performance was her debut in 1999, Northern Star.

Notably, none of the former Spice Girls have yet reached the top spot with a solo album.

Michael Jackson's Chart Legacy

Michael Jackson was a familiar figure on the UK album charts, having secured the number one position nine times during his lifetime and once posthumously in 2009 when The Essential Michael Jackson spent seven weeks at number one.

The re-entry and rapid ascent of that album on the charts has been linked to the success of the film Michael, starring Jackson's nephew Jaafar Jackson.

The film achieved the highest opening weekend ever for a biopic, grossing $217 million (£160 million) globally.

Current Chart Standings and Claims

According to the Official Charts Company earlier this week, fewer than 3,000 units separated Michael Jackson in third place from Kneecap in the top spot.

Following the release of the midweek data, Kneecap stated on social media that Fenian could be

"the first ever Irish language album"

to top the UK charts.

NI inquired with the Official Charts Company regarding this claim; however, they have not yet been able to verify it.

Announcement of Official Number One Album

The UK's Official Number One Album will be revealed at 17:45 BST on Friday.
