Flight of the Conchords Announce Reunion Shows
Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, the New Zealand musical comedy duo known as Flight of the Conchords, have announced four reunion shows at Wellington's Meow Nui venue starting next week. These will be their first live performances since 2018.
The duo, who describe themselves as the "fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo-a cappella-rap-funk-comedy-folk duo," formed in 1998 and gained international fame through their HBO comedy series of the same name. Their popular songs include "Business Time" and "Hiphopopotamus vs Rhymenoceros."
Tickets Sell Out Rapidly
Tickets for the Wellington shows went on sale Wednesday and sold out within 30 minutes, creating a surge of excitement and disappointment among fans.
Preparation for Upcoming Los Angeles Shows
The Wellington concerts will serve as warm-up performances ahead of two shows planned in Los Angeles in May. McKenzie shared with New Zealand's state broadcaster RNZ last month that the duo found themselves struggling to recall their own songs during rehearsals.
"We ended up watching ourselves. We have to pull up YouTube clips to remember how to play our songs," he said. "We’re like a bad covers band of ourselves."
Fan Reactions to Sold-Out Shows
Many fans expressed disappointment after missing out on tickets for the Wellington shows. On the Wellington Facebook page Vic Deals, one fan humorously stated they were "not above selling an organ or two" to obtain tickets. Another offered to "sell a limb," while several others considered gathering outside the venue for a collective listening party.
"We should all band together and just have a massive listening party outside the venue," one fan wrote.
Show Details
The first of the four Wellington shows will begin next Thursday, marking a highly anticipated return for the duo known for their unique blend of musical comedy.
