Dame Shirley Bassey has announced that she will no longer be able to respond to fan mail following upcoming hand surgery.

The Welsh singer, originally from Cardiff, expressed her regret on Instagram:

At 89 years old, Dame Shirley conveyed how deeply moved she has been by the letters she has received throughout her extensive 70-year career.

Welsh television personality Carol Vorderman commented on the post, offering support:

"Shirley. You are the very definition of a star and wishing you all the best. Please let me know if there is anything I can do, and I hope to see you soon."

In her message, Dame Shirley reflected on the honour of entertaining fans and the joy she has found in receiving their correspondence.

"I have had the privilege to meet many of you, and receive fan mail from all around the world!"
"Through letters shared, I have read of your celebrations, your losses, your achievements, memories, dreams - and even how my music has brought generations of families together."

Dame Shirley was raised in Tiger Bay, Cardiff. She left school at the age of 14 to work in a packing factory. Despite this, she spent her evenings and weekends singing in local clubs and pubs, where her talent was recognized in 1955.

Between 1964 and 1979, she recorded the themes for Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever, and Moonraker.

Her 1960 rendition of "As Long As He Needs Me," from the musical Oliver!, remained on the charts for 30 weeks. In 1999, she performed the official song for the Rugby World Cup alongside Bryn Terfel at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, wearing a gown inspired by the Welsh flag.

Honours and Recognition

In 2024, she was made a Companion of Honour at a ceremony held at Windsor Castle. This prestigious accolade, limited to 65 members, acknowledges her outstanding and long-term contributions to the arts.

Reflecting on the ceremony, she shared a memorable moment:

"That's why I grabbed his hands - because I forgot to curtsy,"

She added:

"I think it's more nerve-wracking to receive the award from him than to sing in front of him."
